WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?
When
you hear the word Coaching, you probably think of a basketball,
or soccer, or gymnastics coach. These athletic coaches, when they
coach well, motivate, inspire and help their players build the skills
needed to be successful in their chosen game. They help their young
athletes become the very best individual and team players they can
be.
Life
Coaches do a many of the same things,
only we focus on Life Skills, like
-
How
to develop and keep positive self-esteem
-
How
to establish and maintain healthy relationships
-
How
to eat and exercise in healthy amounts and feel good about your
body
-
How
to deal with mounting school pressures
-
How
to cope with feelings that you may be unique, different from others
around you
-
How
to develop a sense of self-responsibility, rather than always
feeling like a victim
-
How
to set goals and follow through so you can make your own hopes
and dreams come true

A
Coach Is A Partner
A
coach is a partner, an advisor, a mentor, a cheerleader, a fan.
At the very foundation of the Coaching Model is the belief that
the client knows him or herself better than anyone else
and
with the right kind if support and encouragement, all things become
possible.

HOW
DOES COACHING WORK?
Coaching
is typically conducted by phone.
(Our Coaching Services may also be conducted in person, if the
client lives near our Center in Cincinnati)
All of our Life Coaches are college or post-graduate degreed,
seasoned Health and Wellness Professionals. Some have a behavioral
health background. Others come from the health education, nutrition
and fitness fields. All are employed by A WEIGH OUT, the Acoria
Wellness & Eating Disorder Treatment Center, or WellCentered,
Inc., our parent company
We
Have Three Coaching Divisions:
-

in any life
arena

Nutrition to Go!

to learn more about Sports Nutrition as a tool to enhance athletic
performance
After
an initial phone assessment with a Parent, and then the Client,
based on the Clients desired goals, Clients are personally
matched with a Life Coach. Then, the Client and the Coach have their
initial phone conversation
and, together, they decide if theyd
like to work together in a supportive and powerful partnership.

Realistically, to begin to see real behavioral change, most Coaches
recommend a commitment of 3 months. Typically, sessions are structured
into two hour-long sessions per month, or three 40-minute sessions
a month, or four 30-minute sessions per month, depending on what
works best for the client. Homework (we call it fieldwork) is usually
assigned and can be turned in by fax, e-mail, or standard mail before
the next scheduled session.

COACHING
IS CONFIDENTIAL
An
important part of the coaching relationship is the trust between
Coach and Client. This means the Coach does not tell anyone what
you talk about in sessions, unless there is risk of harm to yourself
or others. However, if you are under 18, your parents do have a
right to know some things. Some parents want a general idea of what
goes on and others want details. So, if you are under 18, talk to
your parents about how much they want to know and, together, set
some very clear boundaries about what will and wont be shared.

COACHING IS NOT
Coaching
is not psychotherapy. While psychotherapy addresses problems of
a psychiatric nature, and helps people resolves issues from their
past, Coaching is appropriate for people who are already functioning
well and are ready to build or enhance life skills. Coaching is
not a substitute for the treatment of mental and/or emotional disorders
and therefore may not be appropriate for everyone who inquires about
this service. (For example, someone who has a diagnosable eating
disorder should seek psychotherapy, not coaching. The only exception
to that rule is this
If a person has an eating disorder, and
has a therapist, and wants to hire a coach to work as part of the
recovery team, the Coach may work with the Client and the Therapist
to help the Client achieve some very specific goals. We have seen
this work very effectively.)

HOW
CAN A COACH HELP
AN EMOTIONAL EATER?
Emotional
eating is a very common way that people choose to deal with stress
and uncomfortable feelings. Emotional eating can mask other important
issues in your life. A Coach can help you identify these important
issues and help you discover healthier and more effective ways of
coping. Most importantly, coaching moves you to action in many areas
that contribute to the emotional eating. The client decides what
he or she wants to work on. It can be one or many things.
