A new client comes to a dietitian and says, "I want to lose
weight". Typically, the request is for a "structured eating
plan". But, just like all other diet plans they've tried in
the past, this one also fails. Where does the dietitian go next?
Could this failure have been prevented from the start?
From the moment a new client presents at your door, there are ways
to assess whether you are dealing with an "Emotional Eater".
If there is "emotional" or "disordered" eating
going on, the dietitian's approach must be tailored to that client's
specific needs. Rarely are these types of assessment and engagement
skills taught in school.
We work with Dietitians on a
variety of skill building techniques in the areas of client assessment,
engagement, treatment and retention. We offer practical strategies
for working with "resistance" issues, intuitive eating, and the new "Health At Every Size Paradigm". (A Weigh Out Founder Ellen Shuman is the Co-Chair of the Academy for Eating Disorders Special Interest Group on "Health At Every Size".)
We also consult with private practice dietitians about how to network and create the kind of multi-disciplinary professional alliances necessary to survive in the competitive marketplace: specifically, how to
build multiple cross-referral sources. (Therapists who work with
eating disordered clients are always looking for talented, skilled
dietitians with whom to coordinate care. You just have to know how
to talk the therapist's language to form such an alliance.)
