Self-Truth in Advertising

Friday, April 30th, 2010

How many diet programs, diet books, fat-burning pills, and/or firming creams have you purchased over the years…and then felt lousy about having bought when the intended results failed to materialize? I bet you then heaped blame and shame on yourself rather than on those who falsely promised the products would work.

Self-truth in advertising!  I finally admitted to myself that

“It’s Not a Tumor”

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I’ll call her Sara.  We’d been working together for just a few months.  In the early days, many of our sessions started with discussions about how focused she was on the size and roundness of her stomach.  A year later, she and I still smile when we recall the conversation where she shifted from “…maybe it’s a tumor” to, “or it could have been the 600 calories worth of snacks I had just eaten right before I thought I might have a tumor.”

Sara got clear about why she was so focused on her stomach.

Freedom From Obsession

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

I had an amazing conversation with one of my coaching clients this past Monday. She came to our phone session very excited to tell me about something new that happened to her this past weekend. (I share this story, and her writing, with her permission.)

She told me that she was at work over the weekend. No one else was in the office when she noticed an open bag of Dove Chocolates…the individually wrapped chocolates had spilled out of the bag onto a person’s desk. As soon as she saw the chocolates those old, familiar, rapid and compulsive eating thoughts began.

“No one would know if I take one.” “It’s not my chocolate, but I’m sure they would give me one if I had asked.”

She had a piece of chocolate in her hand. The bargaining began.

What Happens When You See a Camera?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

She glances at the photo, and the pilot light of memory flickers in her eyes. - Frank Deford

The saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words. Unfortunately, for many diets survivors, these are words of shame and self-recrimination. In fact, it’s not uncommon for many diet survivors to avoid the lens of the camera completely. Instead, you may be the one taking the pictures on vacations or at family gatherings. Or, you may try to put yourself into the background of the photograph. Perhaps you allow yourself to be in pictures and then focus on criticizing your appearance. What is lost is

One Step at a Time! (Part 1)

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

If you were to take just ONE SMALL STEP today toward taking better physical care of your body, what might that be? What would be the EASIEST small step…something that if you did it you could actually say, “I feel

Connect With the Expert Within

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

In an effort to make the “right” choices regarding our bodies, eating, exercise and health we can feel bombarded by “the experts.”  This can be especially confusing when these experts offer conflicting advice.

Have you ever considered what can happen when you connect to the “expert within?”  “Who is that?”, you may ask yourself.  You are that expert!  You and your body truly have the information and wisdom you need to make the right choices for you.

So, take a

Listen to Your Food Cravings…Then Try This

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

If you struggle with any type of emotional eating you may sometimes feel a very powerful urge to eat when not physically hungry. Because a craving can be emotionally and physically uncomfortable, people often take the action of satisfying the urge. It is this action, with all its collateral damage, that is at the root of emotional eating.

The good news is it is possible to experience a craving and choose not to respond with

“Sometimes I Binge Because I Just Want to Go Away”

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

“Life feels hard at times. Sometimes I just want to go away.”

I hear this from coaching clients all the time . I heard it from two people this afternoon, alone.

Most people, when they first begin to work with me, believe their problem is mostly about food.  Some poeple ask, “Is it possible I have a food addiction?”.  I explain that

Attitude Makes a Difference

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

The more confidence and acceptance you put into the world, the more positively people will respond to you.

Have you ever heard the expression, “Attitude is everything?” We want you to consider this idea in terms of how you relate to others in your world. Diet survivors frequently talk about dieting, the wish for weight loss, and negative feelings about their bodies. These behaviors are so common in our culture that they have become the way that millions of people relate to each other. “I was bad today,” or “I feel fat,” are phrases that may be heard in any office lunchroom or among friends getting together. Think about what is communicated by these words.

When you complain about your body size or eating habits, you are telling people that there is something wrong with you. This creates the impression that
